Folk theater in India

  • The origin of Indian theatre can be traced backwards and be linked with the tale of fifthveda, Bharatha’s Natya shastra.
  • Apart from vedic literature two great Indian epics, the Ramayana and mahabharatha speak flourishing theatrical activity.
  • Some of the earlier dramatists of the ancient era were ashwagosha, Bhasa, Shudraka, Kalidasa, Harsha, and Bhavabhuti.
  • The beginning  of modern theatre can be traced to 1831, when Prasanna kumar thakur established “Hindu Rangamanch” at Calcutta, which became the main city for development of theatre.
