  • Temperature – The degree of hotness or coldness of a body
  • Thermometer – The device used to measure temperature

There are various types of thermometers depending upon its usage

Clinical thermometer

  • It measures our body temperature
  • It reads temperature between 35°C and 42°C
  • NOTE: the normal temperature of a human body is 37°C

Laboratory Thermometer

  • The range of a this thermometer is generally from –10°C to 110°C

Maximum-Minimum Thermometer

  • Measures the maximum and minimum temperatures of the day

Transfer of heat

  • Conduction - The process by which heat is transferred from the hotter end to the colder end of an object
    • Conductors - Materials which allow heat to pass through them easily (eg: Iron)
    • Insulators – Materials which do not allow heat to pass through them easily (eg: plastic)
  • Convection - The transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid/gas) caused by molecular motion
  • Radiation - The transfer of heat by radiation does not require any medium. All hot bodies radiate heat
